According to the Environmental Audit Commitee urgent action is needed to protect our environment from the effects of plastic pollution. Mary Creagh from the commitee says: "Our throwaway society uses 13 billion plastic bottles each year, around half of which are not recycled. Plastic bottles make up a third of all plastic pollution in the sea" (8 million tons of plastic is being dumped into our oceans every year) This is not only harmful to wildlife but also recent studies have found that billions of people around the world are drinking water contaminated with plastic.
As part of the government's environmental policy, Theresa May has pledged to elimitate all avoidable plastic waste within 25 years.
